ABOUT THIS IMAGE

Big Swell at Cascade Pier, Norfolk Island, South Pacific, Australia. The Cascade landing area is located on the North side of the island, directly opposite to Kingston and has been utilised as an access point since the first colonial settlement for much the same reasons as it is in the 21st century. Namely, if the winds and seas prevent unloading to the South, there is the possibility the North will offer easier access and vice versa. However, there are still many occasions when this is not so straightforward and the ocean simply prohibits it. Cascade, like Kingston, is not a deep-water port so the ferrying of cargo is a delicate operation in any weather, especially at low tide.
The area isn’t heritage listed in the same way that Kingston is, and the pier has changed over time. Most recently between 2016-18 when it was elevated by 1 metre and extended by 25 metres to allow better access for fishing boats, cargo unloading and cruise ship access to help boost the local economy.
