The Bass Rock

ABOUT THIS IMAGE

The Bass Rock sits off the East Lothian coast like an iceberg floating in the ocean. The distinct volcanic plug resides a mile off the mainland coast and is home to some 150,000 gannets, and if you look closely, its white dome top is in fact mostly the nesting birds. With a wingspan of up to 2 metres the fishing seabirds circle the island dancing like leaves in the wind, and on a clear summer’s day the blue water contrasts beautifully with this bright beacon of rock. Floating on the horizon in the distance is the Isle of May, another nature reserve and haven for nesting seabirds.
